first posted on Friday, 1 January 2023 00:00+13:00 (NZDT)

Some reflections on 2022.

In the past year dns.sainternet.xyz has:

  • Answered over half a billion (500,000,000) DNS queries
  • For over 140,000 unique domains
  • Using an encrypted standard 42% of the time
  • From over 5,000 unique client IPs
  • Most of whom (~85%) preferred IPv4
  • Where ~38% resulted in a block (NXDOMAIN)
  • While it maintained a ~95% uptime status

As time marches forward into the new year, and us with it, please be aware that DNS resolution via QUIC legacy ports (UDP 784 and 8853) is to be suspended as of today Friday, 1 January 2023 NZDT.

Munin Pi-hole Plugins: 08.02.00

first posted on Monday, 26 December 2022 22:30+13:00 (NZDT)

The current versions of munin-pihole-plugins, 08.02.00 and 09.03.00 for master and development branches respectively, add support for the recently announced API changes which landed in Pi-hole Web v5.18 where authentication is now required for the summaryRaw endpoint.

If you have updated Pi-hole and some of your graphs have stopped working, simply update munin-pihole-plugins. Or update Pi-hole if your graphs have stopped working after you updated munin-pihole-plugins.

See the project wiki for more information on munin pihole plugins.

Notes:

  • If you are using the telnet API these changes do not concern you

Material Design Lite Dark

There have been several changes to the design and layout of these pages over the past short while, with one of the more drastic and noticeable changes being a full dark theme that follows the system theme and/or browser preference.

I plan on making all this available as a standalone template at some point in the near future, and when I do I'll more than likely make some form of noise about it here.

iOS/macOS Made Easy

Previously relegated to the realm of "if you know, you know", I am very much pleased to announce that that is no longer the case and it is much easier for anyone with an Apple iPhone or Mac to connect to Sainternet DNS over HTTPS or DNS over TLS (iOS 14/macOS Big Sur or higher required).

You can choose your preferred DNS Profile (DoH, DoT, DoH/DoT) and get started here.
